Newly elected Rep. Mark Pocan said on Up w/ Chris Hayes today that Congress is less popular than “cockroaches and traffic jams.” Why is that? Well, the Republican Party’s extreme rightward shift over the last three decades may be largely responsible for just how dysfunctional Congress has become.
According to new data published this week by political scientist Keith Poole, Republicans in the House of Representatives are now more ideologically extreme than at any time since 1879. And as a result, the distance between the two parties, as measured by Poole, is larger than at any time in more than a century.
A lot of the credit for this trend, according to conventional wisdom, goes to the Tea Party. But Poole’s data shows that the Republicans’ rightward shift began long ago, in the late 1970s. And not only that, but even the most moderate Republicans — the tenth ideological percentile, or light red line in the chart above — are now as extreme as the most extreme conservative Republicans were in the 1970s. Put another way, the most conservative member of the House of Representatives in 1976 would, today, be considered the most moderate.
That’s how far the Republican Party has drifted.

You might recall that we reported earlier this week that the NRA had launched an ad/Web site targeting President Obama’s children. The ad claimed… that the school the Obama girls attend, Sidwell friends, has “11 armed guards.”

In fact, the school has no armed guards of any kind.

Now, you’d think that when the NRA saw that the source for the lie was “Breitbart,” a far right blog known for its sensationalism rather than it’s love of veracity, they’d have double checked. Well, if they did, they double checked with Fox News, because it’s a lie.

"

After a mass school shooting in Stockton, California, in 1989, George H.W. Bush issued an executive order, pursuant to the 1968 Gun Control Act, that banned imports of certain assault weapons unless used for sporting purposes. Years later, Bill Clinton by executive order banned imports of almost five-dozen different assault weapons that had been modified to get through that “sporting purposes” exemption. President Obama could go even further.

To take another example, the National Firearms Act of 1934 gives a president broad powers to oversee gun dealers. By executive order, the President could tighten that oversight.

Under his law-enforcement authority the President could also issue executive orders improving information sharing among state and local law enforcement authorities about illegal gun purchases, tracking gun buyers’ history of mental illness, and maintaining data on gun sales for longer periods.

The Administration has already issued a regulation designed to prevent sales of semi-automatic rifles to Mexican drug cartels. It requires stores in states bordering Mexico to notify federal law enforcement officials when someone buys two or more of a particular type of high-caliber, semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine. That regulation, too, could be expanded upon.

Most of us know someone like this, usually male and almost always white. He is enamored with and overvalues his “contribution to society”, while at the same time is terrified with the rapid diminishment of the white male privilege he views as his birthright. This toxic vacillation between ego and anxiety results in passive-aggressive punishment of those few unlucky souls he is still in a position to punish—hard-working people in the service industry, in this case.

Or, more succinctly, he’s a pathetic fucking asshole throwing a tantrum and lashing out like a 2 year-old.”

Huelskamp ‘Not Convinced’ Sandy Relief Bill Is Necessary; Claims Obama’s Policies are Akin to Communism

sp-a-m:

localweeklypaper:

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) appeared on the radio show of American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer today where the far-right congressman said he found no reason for a Sandy relief bill, arguing that FEMA “can’t spend all the [money] quick enough.” Of course, FEMA just today said that the flood insurance program is about to run out of funds and officials from Sandy-affected states roundly criticized the House Republican leadership for refusing to put the urgent care package up to a vote. But the congressman maintained the bill is “loaded up with pork” and that he is “not convinced yet” that a Sandy relief package is needed, seemingly dumbfounded that “for some reason” people want the aid.

While discussing the fiscal cliff deal, Huelskamp told Fischer that Obama has the view that “government should run everything” which he got straight from “the communist centers of the world.” “Far too many of my Republican colleagues don’t understand that about the President, what his ultimate goals are,” Huelskamp said, “that’s frustrating given that we know where the President is at.”

More pearls of wisdom, humanitarianism and evangelical tinged smuckery from Bryan Fischer and company. the American Family Association and the people on it couldn’t get more far Right if it tried.

I dare him to go to New Jersey and say that to the Governor’s face.

When these elected officials say stupid things like this, I want to go to their districts and slap every single person that voted for these doofuses. A really good, hard slap.

[F]ollowing the announcement of the buyout, Time Warner Cable announced that it will abruptly be dropping Current TV, which would deny millions of customers the access to this new channel that promises to give “voice to the voiceless.”

This move will prevent many Americans from being exposed to the progressive views of Current TV anchors and the award-winning coverage of global affairs that Al Jazeera has pioneered.

But while Time Warner doesn’t think its customers need access to this important knowledge, it does continue to offer dozens of channels dealing with…

— Porn: If you’re a Time Warner customer, you’ll have access to the television channels run by Hustler, Playboy and Penthouse (and the high definition versions). Who needs the Arab Spring when you have Hugh Hefner?

— High-end Shopping: The “Gem Shopping Network” will continue to be offered, and for those who don’t like that, there’s Shop Zeal 1-5.

— Movie Trailers: Time Warner doesn’t want to give space to Al Jazeera English U.S., but it will offer “Movie Trailers On Demand.” Yes, an entire channel dedicated to airing movie trailers.

Time Warner Drops Current After Al Jazeera Buyout, Continues to Offer Porn, Jewelry Shopping (via smdxn

I was surprised that Dish Network has carried both Current TV and Al Jazeera since I’ve been a subscriber.

(via sp-a-m)

I’m sure that this decision will be reversed if Al Jazeera offers up a bunch of cash. What should happen is that customers inundate Time Warner with requests to carry Current and/or switch cable companies to one that does.

Geronimo!

early-onset-of-night:

So I guess we’re going over the “fiscal cliff” which isn’t even a cliff. OMG!

Republicans would rather raise taxes on everybody, including the rich, than just the rich. Hard to believe that party is no longer nationally viable, ain’t it? Yep, it’s a real head-scratcher.

Personally, I’m glad we’re going over the “fiscal cliff” which isn’t even a cliff. Automatic spending cuts will kick in, the majority of which will be in the military. We spend 53 cents of every tax dollar taken in on the military. Then we pretend like we don’t have any money. We throw up our hands at all these terrible “deficits” we act like we have. OMG, deficits!

If I spent all my money on Hummels, I can’t go around saying I’m broke. I can’t throw up my hands and say “Well, now I have to cut one of my ‘entitlements’ like car insurance, cuz I’m just so broke!” No, I just blew all my money on Hummels, is all.

In a few decades, the world is going to look back and say, “Remember when the U.S. was, like, a superpower? Hahaha. How did that even happen?”

The mere mention of Hummel figurines always makes me think of Kim Jong-il’s collection in Team America.

David Koch sends letter warning members of Congress not to vote for proposed aid package for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

abaldwin360:

(The Nation) - Billionaire David Koch’s prime political organization, Americans for Prosperity (AFP), having failed in its $125 million quest to oust President Barack Obama, is now aiming at a slightly less sophisticated political target: victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy was the second most costly in American history, leaving 100 lives lost, over $50 billion in devastation and tens of thousands of damaged or destroyed homes. Legislative efforts to help those who survived Hurricane Sandy’s wrath will reach a major stumbling block.

Earlier this week, AFP, which is chaired by Koch and believed to be financed by several other plutocrats from the New York City region, released a letter warning members of Congress not to vote for the proposed federal aid package for victims of the storm that swept New Jersey, New York City and much of the surrounding area in October. An announcement on the group’s website says that the vote next week for the Sandy aid package will be a “key vote”—meaning senators who support sending money for reconstruction could face an avalanche of attack ads in their next election. Already, opposition to the bill is growing, although it passed one procedural hurdle last night.

There is some legitimate criticism with aspects of the legislation, including the fact that some of the money will go to non-Sandy related reconstruction efforts in disaster areas. For AFP, however, the whole bill must die and victims of the storm deserve no help from the government.
